I AM A CELEBRATION

An immersive installation and solo dance performance by and with Chaim Gebber.

I AM A CELEBRATION is a process of decolonization through the eyes of the artist, analyzing his personal trajectory between the Catholic and Afro-Brazilian religions.

Brazilian Catholicism, which arrived there following Portuguese colonization, was shaped in a somewhat polyphonic, perhaps even informal way, which includes the veneration of canonical saints, popular saints and spiritualities crossed by indigenous and African influences.

In I AM A CELEBRATION, Brazilian dance artist Chaim Gebber – who has dedicated himself to a series of works focused on social behaviours and cultural interrelations – delves into his own experiences, memories and affections to understand not only how the church sanctified women and men over time, but, above all, how the people humanized the saints in the daily inventions of life practiced in the dimension of world enchantment.

Strolling through Christianity in amazement at the fantastic universe of Brazil’s party people, through parties, fairs, beliefs, litanies, smells, processions, novenas, sympathies, and other expressions of the passion and faith of the Brazilian people.
